GeoTagging, also known as GeoCoding, is the process of adding geographical identification metadata to various media such as websites, RSS feeds or images. This data usually consists of latitude and longitude coordinates, though it can also include altitude and placenames, viewing angles, viewing directions, and viewing heights.

 

The Basics

In every photo taken with a digital camera, there is "metadata" embedded in the file.  Metadata is just information embedded in a file that is unseen by normal viewing.  When your digital camera takes a picture, it creates an EXIF header inside the digital image.  This EXIF metadata contains all the information about how the photo was taken.  Below is an actual EXIF file from a photo I took with a Nikon D200.  Next page...
